Struggling to Finish Books? Here's some tips. (Blog by Daniel Lee)

Image
After reading Mateo's blog, "Books I Haven't Finished...yet," I found myself pondering about the countless number of books that I haven't finished. For me, I usually find myself not finishing books because I lose interest, or I can't get engaged in a book. So, for my blog, I'm going to write about some tips that I've personally used to keep myself consistently engaged in the books I read. Hopefully these tips may be able help out others in the future.   1. Make reading a routine in your daily life               This may seem incredibly obvious to many, but for many readers who are starting to build a habit in reading, this may sound daunting. It was for me at least. Making reading a routine sounded unnecessary to me because I always looked at reading as a thing I had to do when my dad made me. But when I started to read every day, I found...

The Handmaid's Tale: A Novel for Anyone but the Weak-Kneed (Robenas Tadesse)

Image
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is not for the lighthearted. The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of a young woman named Offred, trapped between the clutches of the Republic of Gilead, formerly known as the United States. After a plague decimates the fertility rate, a group of extremist Puritan Christians slowly take over the country; their goal is to create an entirely self-sufficient nation hell-bent on producing as many infants as possible, disregarding basic human rights. During the Republic of Gilead’s first attempt to gain control, an act of terrorism killed the president and several members of Congress, leaving people terrified and grief-stricken. The military–poisoned with moles and double agents working on behalf of Gilead–declares a national emergency and blames the incident on Muslim fanatics. Shortly after, the Constitution was suspended “temporarily,” while the government claimed to be organizing an election. In the meantime, amid the confusion, the G...

Family of Liars

Family of Liars  Summary and Review By Krishna Jaswal  This blog contains spoilers for We Were Liars. There will be no spoilers for Family of Liars though (which is what this blog is about)!  Summary  Family of Liars in a sense is the prequel to We Were Liars. It tells the story of Caroline Sinclair, the mother of Johnny who was a part of “The Liars” along with Cadence, Mirren, and Gat. The only thing, which is highkey the main plot twist of We Were Liars, that I’ll spoil is that the accident that Cadence goes back to the island to find out about was a fire. There was a fire and out of the Liars, she was the only one to survive. The summer she goes back, Johnny, Mirren, and Gat appear to her as ghosts to help her find out what truly happened. I dropped a hint or two in my last blog (which you should go read if you haven’t!) about the island being haunted and what really happened to the Liars.  Even though Family of Liars starts off with Johnny being ...

Evil Under the Sun Evil Under the Sun is a whodunit classic written by Agatha Christie. In Evil Under the Sun , the famous detective Hercules Poirot travels to a resort to relax. At the resort, a former actress named Arlena Marshall, who is portrayed as a self-centered person who causes people to not like her, is found strangled on the beaches of the resort. With everyone at the resort having an alibi, it is up to Hercules Poirot to find out who did this murder.  This book is one of my favorite detective novels. I have always been a fan of whodunit books and have recently decided to revisit them. The main thing I like about this book is how it keeps you in suspense till the end. Once I picked up this book, I only felt like putting it done once I found out who did it. Another thing Agatha Christie does well is how she writes the novel in a way where we are in the detective shoes ourselves and you can almost imagine yourself trying to solve the case.  This involves you m...

Book Review on Daughter of the Deep by Robenas Tadesse

Image
I’m sure that the majority of you reading this are familiar with the author Rick Riordan, most famously known for writing the Percy Jackson series. In 2021 Rick Riordan released a refreshing new book, completely outside of the Percy Jackson universe. Daughter of the Deep is the first series book (Please, Rick Riordan, please release book two very soon). Daughter of the Deep occurs in a near-future world where climate change has deeply affected the environment. This novel is heavily inspired by Jules Verne's classic "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" while also a compelling exploration of marine biology, environmental conservation, and some pretty imaginative technology. The story starts with Ana Dakkar, a freshman at Harding-Pencroft Academy receiving a cryptic message from her father, the renowned but long-lost Captain Nemo Dakkar. Harding-Pencroft Academy is a five-year high school that produces the best marine specialists in the world. The message tells her to search for ...

We Were Liars Summary and Review By Krishna Jaswal Summary      We Were Liars by E. Lockhart is narrated by Cadence Sinclair, a 17 year old who suffers headaches and migraines because of an accident that happened 2 summers ago. The Sinclair family is perfect, beautiful, and wealthy. They're tall, handsome, athletic, and old money. In the summertime they all live on a privately owned island off the coast of Massachusetts together. In the family there are “the Liars,” which consisted of Cadence, her cousins Johnny and Mirren, and a teenager named Gat who Cadence had fallen in love with. They grew up with each other and were known to be very close. The Liars however never stayed in touch with Cadence while she was recovering from her accident.     After a phone call from some relatives and a visit from her Granddad, it becomes clear that something is going on in the family, something wrong and the truth is not being told. Granddad’s mind is starting to falter ...
